Our summer library reading program was the theme of space, for the 50th anniversary of the moonwalk. My daughter has also been fascinated with planets and space, so I decided to roundup some book lists and space themed sensory play activities that make great book extension activities.
Space Themed Book List
My friend Kati is an Usborne Books consultant and shared a lot of these space-themed book titles with me. I plan on adding a few of them to our library of books so we can explore space this school year.

Space Themed Sensory Play Book Extension Activities
Sensory play is a great way to add in book extension activities to what you are reading. It provides a hands-on way for your kids to explore the topic you are reading about. Plus it’s fun!
Here are some great space themed sensory play book extension activities you could use with many of the books mentioned above.
Let’s start with some fun moon activities. And using a sensory play activity about the moon would not be complete without moon dough! This Out of This World Moon Dough from Steam Powered Family is a great one.
You can also explore the moon with this fun space-themed sensory bottle from The Chaos And The Clutter.
And there is this fun moon themed sensory bin from Fun with Mama or this kinetic sand space moon walking sensory bin from 3 Dinosaurs.
And now for the rest of the galaxy, these sensory play activities are sure to encourage your child’s imagination and creativity.
These galaxy jars from My Home Based Life are so beautiful! I can’t wait to make this with my kids. You can also make these rainbow galaxy sensory bottles for a smaller version from Rhythms of Play.
Make some outer space play dough and have fun with these space play dough mats from Nurture Store, or this outer space play dough invitation to play idea from Fantastic Fun and Learning.
Continue the space extension activities with this super fun space slime from Living Life and Learning.
